Frankly amazing how this story (which I mentioned briefly a couple of days ago, assuming it would quickly become large news, widely discussed) simply does not exist in the American media. I can't even find much about it in the blogs (although the always-excellent Juan Cole has it nailed).

Repeating: the Iraqi National Assembly has voted unanimously to demand an apology from the Bush administration for a physical assault by a U.S. soldier on one of its members.

Obviously, no apology is coming. The American media has missed this one almost entirely, and so Bush will pay absolutely zero domestic political cost for simply ignoring the demand. (The only reference to the event most U.S. media outlets have mentioned is almost completely buried in a wire story about the bodies in the Tigris, with the non-apology-apology contained in the U.S. version of events treated as the only perception that matters.)

So. The entire Iraqi National Assembly is getting a big symbolic middle finger from the United States. And this is being reported across the Arab world.

This is not good.
