From today's LAT article on hearings questioning the teaching of evolution in Kansas, someone named Kathy Martin rationalizes her her unfamiliarity with deductive reasoning with a staggering display of historical and constitutional ignorance:

"We can't ignore that our nation is based on Christianity -- not science."

Given the degree to which most of the nation's founders were suspicious of mixing religion with government, this is only one step removed from stating:

"We can't ignore that ice cubes are based on fire -- not water."

Kathy Martin, incidentally, isn't just some random schmo. She's a member of the Kansas state board of education.

I used to do a joke about Kansas deciding that evolution isn't science, which was OK because scientists no longer consider Kansas to be a part of evolution. Always got a huge laugh in clubs.

That was years ago.

That shouldn't have stayed funny.
