The BBC has a spiffy little flash-animated map of the UK election results.

Turns out Britain is not only divided between red shires and blue shires, but yellow and green ones, too.

Not only is this useful for zooming in on vital details -- for example, Elfyn LLwyd has held off a challenge from Rhodri Jones in that all-important Meirionnydd Nant Conwy contest -- but it's also a good chance to review the quirks of the English sense of geography, which are infinite.

In short, you'll notice that the Eastern district is to the north of London, the East Midlands is to the northwest, and the South East district is to the southwest.  South East, as it happens, is in the same direction as the South West district, only not as far.

North East is in fact to the slight northwest of London, although is is at least northeast of North West, which is of course mostly further south.

And don't even get me started on Wales.

I can't wait to go back.
