This delightful news from the Boston Globe, pointed out by the folks at ThinkProgress.org:

A leading Saudi manufacturer of the gas additive and possible carcinogen MTBE greased our Congress with over $1.5 million in contributions before getting a bill through the House shielding them from legal liability.

The cost of cleaning MTBE out of our water is already estimated at about $29 billion.

If you're curious, the EPA has published a nice little .pdf map showing MTBE clean-up necessary around the country. And, bonus for me and everyone else in California, the state has published this neat little page with data links that let me see that drinking water might well be contaminated in my very own neighborhood.

From now on, I'm drinking and bathing in nothing but hard liquor.
