Was just talking with Jon this morning about the purpose of blogs.

We may or may not be doing society any good.  Hard to say.

There's a good chance that what we're really doing here is creating a series of historical documents which will be used by some future civilization to analyze how and why exactly we drove ourselves into oblivion.

Maybe the most we can hope for is that perhaps some dolphin-evolved version of Jared Diamond will squint at our ruminations, stroke his blowhole thoughtfully, and explain to the other dolphin people how to learn from the past and avert their own destruction.

But then it dawned on me: this future civilization will also need to develop computers.

And not just any computers.

Windows-compatible computers.

[A few moments of staring into the middle distance, letting this sink in.  Then, quietly:]

Even the dolphin people are doomed.
